League Pacesetter Heads To Uyo With Hope

Surprise league leader after Week Nine games, Zamfara United, would travel to Uyo on Sunday to face Akwa United with optimism of getting a favourable result to remain among the early frontrunners in the ongoing Premier League season.

General Manager of the club, Shehu Gusau, told Saturday Independent in a telephone interview that everyone is excited by the current form of the team and would be eager to continue its fine run to the start of the season.

Gusau, who also doubles as the vice chairman of the Nigeria Premier League (NPL), however, does not agree that the leading position of his club is a fairy tale run, which would vanish as time wears on this season.

"We have been in the Premier League for sometime now and we have paid our dues as one of the young teams in the Premier League. That we are leading the league now should not be a surprise to anyone because all of the 20 clubs in the league are capable of leading the table and leading it.

"I know we have the players to carry us far this season and that is why we are on top of the league at the moment. Our performance this season is not a flash in th pan because we have worked hard to get this far," he said.

But the Zamfara United chief knows that the job does not stop at just perching on top of the league table and then fading off without having anything to show for such performance.

"It is going to be a long season and we are prepared for it. That we are leading now does not mean we are sit back or go to sleep. There is so much work to do," he said.

Last season, Akwa United won the same fixture by a lone goal

at the U.J. Esuene Stadium in Calabar.

Head coach of Akwa United, Godwin Uwua, would be looking for a repeat of such result after he led his side to grab its first point of the season at Gateway Football Club of Abeokuta.
