Diaspora Delta Doctors Donate Medical Equipment To Govt By Emeka Umejei, Reporter, Lagos The free healthcare scheme of the Delta State government received a boost over the weekend, with the donation of medical equipment and medications by the Delta Doctors in the Diaspora (DDD), a non-governmental organization based in Atlanta, U.S. The items donated, include blood-sugar measuring equipment, blood pressure measuring equipment, cholesterol assessment kits and drugs estimated at over N5 million. Dr. Isioma Okoba, leader of the group, while making the donation at the flagging off of the free rural healthcare scheme at Orhoakpor in Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta State, said the gesture was part of their effort to support the state government to ensure the success of the free healthcare programme. Okobah said their mission was to ensure a better health for all Deltans and used the occasion to commend the Delta State government for the initiative. She re-affirmed the groups' resolve to partner with Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan-led administration to promote healthcare service delivery in the state, adding that the group would organize health fair for rural communities in December to further give added impetus to the current effort at boosting the health needs of rural dwellers. Dr. Joseph Otumara, commissioner for Health Delta State, commended the DDD for supporting the scheme and enjoined the group to keep the flag flying, stressing that with their collaborative effort, the dreams of the state government at improving the health of all Deltans would be realized. The commissioner also used the occasion to appeal to rural dwellers to avoid patronizing quacks in seeking medical assistance, pointing out that the rural health scheme was primarily meant to bring health to the grassroots.
