Anambra To Rehabilitate Obizi Water Scheme With N360m

Anambra To Rehabilitate Obizi Water Scheme With N360m

By Chukwujekwu Ilozue, Reporter, Onitsha

Anambra State Government has awarded contract for the rehabilitation of Obizi Water Scheme abandoned since the end of the civil war.

On completion, the water scheme would provide water for the entire Aguata council and beyond.

The state governor, Mr. Peter Obi, explained that the contract was awarded in the spirit of Anambra Integrated Development Strategy (ANIDS), which is aimed to turn around all facets of life of the citizens of the state.

The contract, which valued at N360 million, was awarded to Dot Associates Nigeria Limited.

Briefing journalists when he took his team to the site of the project, the technical director of the contracting firm, Mr. Wolf Gang Bunde, said the the duration of the contract is 12 weeks, adding that the site office would soon be put in place.

Also, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Mike Udah, explained that the Obizi Water Scheme, which was set up in the 1960s, has been non-functional over the years, as successive administrations had failed to revitalise it. When this rehabilitation job is completed, it will supply water to the communities in Aguata and Orumba councils and environs.

Already, the clearing of the site had begun. Unlike boreholes, surface water schemes like Obizi, supply water pure pipe borne uninterrupted once they are properly done.

According to him, the surface water scheme had become imperative since boreholes fail in the Aguata area because of its peculiar terrain.

It will be recalled that the Peter Obi-led Administration had, in conjunction with the European Union, revitalised the Amawbia Water Scheme, which had been abandoned for decades.
