Falana Deserves To Be SAN -Akeredolu

By Adam Adedimeji Law Editor

President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Olurotimi Akeredolu, has declared that Femi Falana, whose name was among those penciled down for conferment of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) is the most qualified for the rank.

He was addressing journalists at the maiden edition of the NBA Monthly Media briefing instituted by the new executive of the Association on Thursday, when he made the submission.

Although, Akeredolu did not condemn the Justice Idris Kutigi-led Legal Practitioners Privileges Committee for Falana's failure to make the list, he believes he deserves to be given on account of his pedigree and experiences so far in the field of legal works.

Debunking the insinuation in some quarters that the conferment has been turn to "man know man" and "cash and carry", Akeredolu said NBA's position on the issue is that those that are qualified should not be denied.

He, however, called for the lawyers' representatives on the Committee to be increased so that lawyers' interests could be better protected.

He also canvassed that NBA should have a say in who represent lawyers in the Privileges Committee.

Commenting on the recent assault on the daughter of the National Assembly's Sergeant-at-arms by Navy ratings, Akeredolu advised anybody whose right is trampled upon to seek redress in the court of law as the lady does.

According to him, a human right abuse is a personal thing and NBA cannot go to court on behalf of anybody.

"NBA also berated the government for their intolerance of the media and called on the authority to seek redress in courts of law if it thinks media isn't fair in reportage of its action," he said.
