Meeting To Reinstate Ekiti Speaker Deadlocked

Meeting To Reinstate Ekiti Speaker Deadlocked

Peace meeting between the 18 legislators of the Ekiti State House of Assembly and Governor Segun Oni on the impeachment of the former speaker, Olufemi Bamisile, hit the rock on Friday.

Our correspondent reports that 18 of the 26 lawmakers in the Assembly had on July 8 impeached Bamisile and replaced

him with Olatunji Odeyemi of the People Democratic Party (PDP).

Apart from meeting the governor, the pro-impeachment lawmakers held a separate meeting with the Bamisile group late Friday.

Speaking in Ado-Ekiti, two members of the Assembly, Funminiyi Afuye and Adewole Asaolu said the peace meeting was called at the instance of the governor.

They said the meeting was inconclusive and that all parties were expected to reconvene early next week.

Asaolu, who is also the House chairman on culture and tourism, said the two meetings could not arrive at a decision.

Commenting on telephone also, the State Commissioner for Information and Civil Orientation, Odunayo Ategbero, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN)that the meeting was on-going.

He expressed hope that the issues would soon be resolved amicably.

Bamisile, however, declined comments on the meeting when contacted, saying, "I cannot give you any response pertaining to the meeting any longer."
