Judges' Absence Stalls Chime's Appeal

Judges' Absence Stalls Chime's Appeal

By Emmanuel Nzomiwu , Reporter, Enugu

Absence of two Justices of the Appeal Court sitting in Enugu, stalled resumption of hearings yesterday, on the appeal by Enugu State Governor, Sullivan Chime, against the nullification of his election by the lower tribunal.

The matter was initially slated with three others, including that of the Action Congress (AC) governorship candidate, Dubem Onyia, who is contesting part of the tribunal's ruling.

Though three Justices of the five-man panel reported for work, they could not convene in the absence of the Chairman, Justice Victor Omage and another member, who were inexplicably absent.

Supporters of the litigants were disappointed, when acting Registrar of the Court, Kalu Eleazu, announced that all election matters have been rescheduled to Monday, May 19.

However, Eleazu did not give reasons for this development, but left the court premises immediately he made the announcement.

Counsels to the litigants present in court when Eleazu announced the change in date included, J. I. Ibik, Justina Offiah, Anthony Mogboh, Ricky Tarfa and Alex Iziyon.

Ibik, Offiah and Mogboh are in the legal team of Chime while Tarfa and Iziyon are representing Labour Party (LP) Candidate, Okechukwu Ezea, who was also in Court.
