India Requests Bangladesh's Support In Countering Terrorism

India on Thursday sought Dhaka's help in tackling terrorism, particularly involving militants based in Bangladesh.

Indian Foreign Secretary Shivshankar Menon and his Bangladeshi counterpart Mohammed Touhid Hossain held talks in New Delhi covering security, border management, water resources, including sharing of common river waters, and economic and trade related issues.

"The discussions were very useful and led to much greater understanding of each other's position," Menon told a press conference with Hossain after the talks.

The Indian official also said the two countries had agreed that a bilateral technical committee would be set up to expedite disputes relating to river waters. The Indian delegation raised the issue of terrorism emanating from Bangladeshi soil and sought Dhaka's cooperation in curbing such activities.

"Terrorism has to be tackled resolutely... We discussed how to meet it together. We look forward to working together against terrorism," Menon said. Menon said the security of the two countries was linked and said the home secretaries from India and Bangladesh would meet soon to facilitate greater cooperation on the issue.

Hossain described terrorism as a "global problem" and said the two countries have the mechanism of Home Secretary-level meetings to address it. Indian security agencies suspect that Bangladesh-based Islamic militant group Harkat-ul Jehadi Islami (HuJI)was involved in this year's worst terrorist attack in India that killed more than 60 people in the northern city of Jaipur.

HuJI is also blamed for carrying out serial bombings in northern Uttar Pradesh in November, which left 13 people dead and wounded more than 40.
