Bankole Pledges Not To Lose FocusBy Festus Owete ,Assistant Editor, AbujaSpeaker of the House of Representatives, Dimeji Bankole, has promised not to derail from the current legislative agenda in the House which, he believes, is yielding good results. Bankole spoke during his investiture ceremony as the 10th Honorary Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (NIQS). He said the progress being made by the House, particularly in the area of representation, lawmaking and oversights was unprecedented in the history of the nation. Chairman of the occasion and former National President of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Wole Olanipekun (SAN), called on members of the House and other Nigerians to support the many good reformist works of the Speaker as a way of advancing the development of the country. Olanipekun said Bankole has brought a progressive agenda to the governance at the legislative branch, adding that even though "Bankole is my junior by age, he is our leader by position and performance in office in the short time he has spent in office." He recalled the Speaker's speech at the NBA Conference in Abuja recently where he addressed the issue of constitutional development, the crisis in the Niger Delta and the pioneering discoveries of financial malfeasances in major sectors of the economy through the House's oversight function. Olanipekun added that the 16,000 strong membership of NBA were so impressed they gave Bankole a standing ovation. Describing Bankole as a "young, dynamic and humble man", Olanipekun said he merits any award given to him in view of the great responsibility he has been discharging creditably since he became Speaker.
