Atiku Clocks 62Friends and family members of former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar will troop to his residence to sing happy birthday to him come Tuesday as he attains 62. The Turakin Adamawa, as he is fondly called, was born November 25, 1946. He was not just a member of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), but one of the founding fathers of the party until 2006 when he moved on to the Action Congress (AC) to actualise his political ambition of becoming the president of the Federal Republic Nigeria. Before stepping into the political terrain, he spent 20 years working with the Nigeria Customs and Excise, where he rose to the rank of a deputy director before taking a leap into business and later to politics in 1989. Atiku is a native of Jada Local Government Area of Adamawa State. He had his primary education at Jada Primary School, from where he moved on to Jada Boarding Senior Primary School and Adamawa Provincial Secondary School (Now General Murtala Muhammed College) for his secondary education. He later went to School of Hygiene, Kano and Ahmadu Bellow University (ABU), Zaria, Kaduna State. Atiku also attended the Advanced Customs and Excise Course for Senior Officers in Finland and also, Cairo Police Academy, Egypt. Before former President Olusegun Obasanjo picked him as his running mate, he was the governor-elect, Adamawa State during the 1999 presidential election. During his tenure as vice president, he was the chairman, National Council on Privatisation (NCP) and National Economic Intelligence Council (NEIC). He holds a Doctor of letters degree from the Federal University of Technology, Yola; honorary fellowship award from the Federal Polytechnic, Auchi; honorary doctorate degree LLB, from the University of Calabar and honorary doctorate degree, Pubic Administration from the Imo State University. He also holds some traditional titles including, Baagbile Oke-Ona Egba and Aare Adimola of Ife. He is a recipient of the national award, Grand Commander of the Niger (GCON).
