Opel Unveils Insignia

Opel Unveils Insignia

By Oladunjoye Phillip, Senior Correspondent, with agency report

Vehicle enthusiasts around the globe will have something to cherish between July 23 and August 3 when Opel will be showcasing its new new flagship car - Opel Insignia - to the public at the British International Motor Show. The car would come in the four-door notchback and five-door hatchback versions.

The introduction of the car in two versions, the company disclosed in a statement, was to give buyers the privilege to choose between a notchback and a hatchback by the time the vehicle hits the market. The two versions, the company said are both elegant and dynamic.

With its sleek and aerodynamic body, which has a class-leading Cd value of 0.27, buyers might have no cause to complain.

The company revealed that the new Opel Insignia highlights breathtaking design. For instance, it said the body styles of the versions boast a flowing, muscular yet elegant silhouette with a coupÈ roofline. It noted that the designers of the new car deliberately created similar versions to retain the beauty of Opel's latest mid-sized car, with the length of both the notch and hatchback, at 4,830 mm, and the wheelbase of 2,737 mm remain the same.

"The Insignia's fuel consumption, CO2 emissions and driving dynamics benefit from the aerodynamic efficiency that was perfected during more than 650 hours in the wind tunnel, which brings about a class-leading drag coefficient of 0.27," the company stated.

The newly developed chassis could also be enhanced with the innovative, integrated FlexRide mechatronic system, as well as the sophisticated adaptive 4x4. Its lightning-fast distribution of torque over the four wheels ensures top stability and traction while improving dynamic handling performance.

The four gasoline engines, which meet Euro 5 emissions standards, range from a four-cylinder 115 hp unit to a V6 with 260 hp. Three new direct-injection turbo-diesels exclusively developed for the Insignia feature a displacement of 2.0 liters and power outputs spanning from 110 to 160 hp.

According to Alain Visser, Chief Marketing Officer, General Motors, Europe, "Dynamic performance is one of the Opel brand's core values. In the new Opel Insignia, this defining characteristic is realized by sophisticated powertrain technology, active safety and the interface between driver and car. The Insignia's level of comfort and environmental friendliness is unrivaled even among considerably more expensive competitors. With the Insignia, Opel continues pursuing its strategy of making advanced technology affordable for more customers."

He explained that the beginning of Opel's modern mid-size heritage dates back to 1970 with the launch of the Ascona, which sold 4.4 million units over three generations. This, he said, was succeeded by the Vectra in 1988, heralding a new era of innovative models from Opel. "With almost 5.5 million models sold to date, the Opel Vectra is one of the key players in the mid-size segment," he recounted.
